Confessions
Today in school we had a lovely little prayer service in the church where Jimmy, Ronan, Brian and Flinn did readings and then all the boys had the opportunity to do confessions with Fr. John and Fr. Martin. This is important for the preparation for both Christmas and our Confirmation.
Hurling Mini-league finals
Congratulations to Naomh Lorcán Ua Tuathail, Naomh Oilibhéar Pluincéid and Naomh Bhríd who won the A, B and C finals in the mini leagues today and well done to all who participated over all 6 rounds. It was highly enjoyable and we were blessed with great hurling weather. Keep practicing over the Christmas and we will hit the ground running in 2014.
An Oiche roimh an Nollaig
On Monday we had a very enjoyable morning at a play in the Pavillion Theatre in Dun Laoghaire. We took the DART to the play and the play itself was very funny and it had a lovely story which was delivered in Irish and English using music, dancing, rhyme, puppetry, lighting effects and spoken word. The class can highly recommend this show to both adults and children.

Hearing Sensitivity Test
Test to
measure hearing sensitivity
Aim. To
compare the hearing sensitivity of all of the members of our class in order to
prove that individuals have different levels of hearing sensitivity.
Materials.
- metre stick
- trundle wheel
- alarm (on phone)
- lollipop stick
- human subjects
- chart (and clipboard)
- pens
- whistle
- large outdoor space
- camera (to document evidence)
Method
- Each subject got a lollipop
stick and wrote his/her name on it.
- In a large outdoor space we
marked a starting point where the alarm would sound. Then all subjects
walked 100 metres away from the starting point (for measurement).
- Then the tester started the
alarm and blew the whistle for the first subject to start walking back in
a straight line towards the starting point with his/her lollipop stick in
hand. As soon as the subject heard the alarm he/she had to place their
lollipop stick into the ground to mark the point where they first heard
the alarm.
- After one or two subjects had
done the experiment we decided as a group for them to begin walking toward
the starting point from about 30 metres away as we found that 100 metres
was much to far away.
- Point 3 was repeated until all
subjects had placed their lollipop sticks into the ground.
- We then returned to the starting point with the trundle wheel and measured how far each lollipop stick was away from the starting point. We recorded these results in a chart.
Results affected by wind and passing traffic noise.

Church Christmas Card Photographs
We are hugely proud of Matthew in our class whose photographs were chosen to make up the 2013 Christmas card for the Star of the Sea Church in the Sandymount Parish. We have known for a long time that Matthew was excellent in this area, since he let us view his Flickr account last year, but this is a very special honour for him and it means that everyone in the community now gets to view his wonderful work. Here are a selection of the photographs taken for the Christmas card.
Well done Matt.
Metabolic Energy System
On Tuesday Finn's Mum, Gwen came in to give us a very interesting talk about the metabolic energy system. She explained to us that the human body is like a machine and that we have to fuel the machine properly. She also explained that we need different types of nutrition for different types and lengths of physical activity and these can be categorised into 3 main areas. She also spoke to us about hydration and how water is the best thing we can drink. The talk was very beneficial for the class and we will use a lot of what we learned as part of young scientist project.
Christmas Tree Baubles
Today for art we did construction. We made Christmas tree baubles using aluminium foil and string and we covered them with 2 layers of newspaper Papier Mâché and one layer of coloured sugar paper Papier Mâché. We did this using a mixture of PVA glue and water.
It was very messy but good fun.
Tomorrow we will decorate our baubles.
